Fiat Chrysler to lay off 1300 workers in Sterling Heights


The automaker said it informed the United Auto Workers as well as city and state officials of the layoffs Wednesday afternoon. The company dumped more than $1 billion into the plant, which was once on the chopping-block, and touted it as one of the most state-of-the-art in the business. It comes after months of temporary layoffs at the 5-million-square-foot facility due to a lack of demand for the Chrysler 200 midsize sedan, the facility’s only vehicle.Fiat Chrysler says the plant’s second shift will return to work Monday and be on the job through July 5. “The company will place indefinitely laid off employees in open full-time positions as they become available within the Detroit labor market based on seniority”, FCA said in an emailed statement.
